Gym Instructor Salary and Working Hours

The National Careers Service lists £17,000–£27,000 a year for the broader fitness instructor role. This is a national guide that may include trainee pay at the starter end, not a guaranteed salary after Level 2 or a Sussex pay scale.

Earnings at a glance

  • The NCS estimate covers fitness instructors, including gym and group training roles.
  • Starter estimates may include trainees; check the actual vacancy.
  • Compare guaranteed paid hours and duties, not just the headline figure.
  • Level 3 personal training is a separate progression decision.

What the official salary estimate covers

Checked on 8 September 2026, the National Careers Service fitness instructor profile gives a starter-to-experienced estimate of £17,000 to £27,000 annually. It includes gym instructor among the job titles. The range is a guide to the wider occupation, not a survey of SSTA graduates or a qualification-based pay scale.

NCS explains that starter figures can include trainee salaries, and that hours, location and employer affect estimates. Do not treat the lower figure as a current full-time offer for every adult worker. Check each vacancy’s contracted hours, employment terms and applicable pay requirements.

Compare the contract behind the salary

A full-time-equivalent salary is not necessarily the amount a part-time employee receives. Ask for the actual gross annual pay for the hours offered, and whether evenings, weekends, opening duties and required meetings are included. Keep discretionary bonuses apart from guaranteed pay.

For example, a purely hypothetical £30,000 full-time salary based on forty weekly hours would scale to £18,750 for twenty-five hours if the employer applies a simple pro-rata calculation. That £18,750 is gross pay before deductions. The example explains the comparison only; it is not a vacancy or an assessment of a lawful hourly rate.

Keep salary, turnover and take-home separate

Compare money over the same period and for the same amount of work. An employed gross annual salary is pay before deductions. A session fee is a sale to a client; add completed, paid bookings to find business turnover. Profit is what remains after business costs. Personal take-home also depends on tax, pension provision and other commitments.

The examples below are simplified planning exercises. All prices, bookings and costs are invented inputs, not SSTA prices, market averages or predictions. They do not calculate taxable profit or personal take-home. Check which expenses are allowable under the rules for your circumstances.

Check what extra work actually adds

If a gym arrangement combines paid floor hours with the opportunity to sell personal training, separate the two income streams. A promise that you can find clients does not turn those possible sales into guaranteed salary. Check the additional qualification needed and any rent, commission or unpaid floor-time arrangement.

Progression might involve senior duties, management or further coaching qualifications. Choose the next step against a role description and its requirements. A move into independent coaching changes your costs and responsibilities as well as your possible income.

Build a plan for Chichester and Sussex

For gym instructor work around Chichester, collect current vacancies and actual quotes within a journey you can sustain. Record contracted hours, duties and guaranteed pay separately from commission or possible client income. National career guidance does not establish a Sussex salary or the number of clients available locally.

For independent work, investigate travel between shifts and any costs attached to independent classes or personal training. Compare a quiet period with a sustainable regular week, and allow for holidays, illness and cancellations. A full diary assumption can hide the amount of work needed before the first booking and between sessions.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the £17,000–£27,000 range a Sussex salary?

No. It is the National Careers Service estimate for the wider fitness instructor occupation, checked on 8 September 2026. It does not establish pay for Chichester or any individual employer.

Will I start on £17,000 after Level 2?

The estimate is not a graduate salary guarantee. NCS says starter figures may include trainee pay. Use a current job offer and its hours, duties and terms to assess your actual gross pay.

Can I add personal training income immediately?

Do not assume a gym instructing qualification alone meets a personal training role’s requirements. Confirm the required Level 3 route and the venue’s commercial terms before budgeting for clients.
