How Long Does It Take to Become a Sports Massage Therapist?

The answer depends on the qualification size, the provider’s timetable and the hours you can give it each week. Here is how to work out a realistic timeline before you enrol.

Your planning notes

  • The Active IQ Level 3 Sports Massage Diploma is listed at 390 hours of total qualification time, 295 of them guided learning.
  • Calendar length depends on the provider’s timetable and your weekly study time, so ask for the timetable in writing.
  • Case studies, practical observations and any reassessment can add time.
  • Allow time after qualifying for insurance, records and a place to work before you take paying clients.

The short answer

Most people start with a Level 3 sports massage qualification. The one SSTA teaches, the Active IQ Level 3 Technical Specialist in Sports Massage Therapy (Diploma), is listed on the Ofqual Register at 390 hours of total qualification time. That figure is the size of the qualification, not a number of weeks.

How many weeks or months it takes depends on how the provider spreads the teaching and how much study you can fit around work and family. Ask any provider for its timetable, the dates of compulsory sessions and when assessment takes place, then build your own plan from those facts.

What the 390 hours include

The Ofqual Register gives two figures for the Level 3 diploma (610/3925/1): 295 guided learning hours and 390 hours of total qualification time. Ofqual defines guided learning as being taught, or otherwise learning, under the immediate guidance or supervision of a tutor. That guidance can be given in the same room or remotely in real time, and assessment under a tutor’s supervision also counts.

So a qualification’s guided learning hours are not a count of classroom days. They can include tutor-led time beyond the days you spend in a teaching room, such as live remote sessions and supervised assessment. Total qualification time then adds the independent study, practice and assessment preparation an average learner needs without a tutor supervising.

When you compare providers, ask how their teaching days, any live remote sessions and their assessments make up the guided learning for the qualification.

Turn 390 hours into weeks

The table divides 390 hours by different weekly study totals. It is arithmetic to help you plan, not the length of any provider’s course. A provider’s fixed teaching dates may make the course shorter or longer than your own pace would suggest.

What can add time

Practical skills take repetition. Active IQ assesses the diploma partly through observation and questioning of your practical work and through a case study, so you need time to practise between sessions and to complete case-study treatments.

Reassessment, missed sessions, illness or a busy period at work can all move your finish date. Ask the provider what happens if you miss a compulsory session and how resits are arranged.

  • Case-study treatments you arrange between classes
  • Practice time to prepare for observed assessment
  • Reassessment if a unit is not passed first time
  • Time away from study for work, family or illness

Before your first paying client

A certificate is not the last step. Before you take bookings, arrange insurance that covers the treatments you offer and the places you work, set up consultation and consent forms, and decide how you will keep client records securely. Sole traders who use personal information may need to pay the ICO data protection fee.

You also need somewhere to work, a clear service and price, and a way for clients to book. Some people do this during the course; others take a few weeks after qualifying.

Level 4 comes later

Level 4 sports massage is a progression route. It normally needs an appropriate Level 3 qualification first, so it adds to your timeline rather than replacing Level 3. Many practitioners work at Level 3 for a while before deciding whether Level 4 suits the clients they want to see.

Planning your timeline with SSTA

SSTA teaches the Level 3 diploma in person in Chichester, in groups of up to 10, for £1,997.99. The teaching timetable and next start date are confirmed by admissions before you enrol, so ask for them in writing and check them against your work and family commitments.

If Chichester is too far, you can register interest from elsewhere in the South or South East; this does not confirm a local group, venue or place. No venue outside Chichester exists yet; the venue is confirmed in writing before you pay.
