Your planning notes

  • Personal training involves coaching, planning and communication as well as exercise knowledge.
  • The Active IQ Level 3 route SSTA identifies requires a suitable Level 2 gym or fitness instructing qualification.
  • Compare practical teaching and assessment alongside fee and delivery.
  • Qualification, employment and building a client base are separate steps.

Understand the work before choosing the course

Enjoying your own training is a useful starting interest, but coaching asks different things of you. Consider whether you enjoy listening, explaining an exercise in more than one way, adapting a plan and reviewing progress with someone whose goals differ from yours.

Think through an ordinary client relationship: an initial conversation, a suitable plan, coaching sessions, progress reviews and clear records. If you are considering self-employment, add scheduling, marketing and business administration. These tasks belong in your career decision alongside time spent on the gym floor.

Check the Level 2 starting point

For the Active IQ Level 3 Personal Training Diploma identified by SSTA, a suitable Level 2 Gym Instructing or Fitness Instructing qualification is required. Send the academy your exact certificate title and awarding organisation so it can check your route.

If you are new to fitness qualifications, ask about the Level 2 foundation first. A provider advertising a combined Level 2 and Level 3 package is offering a different starting route from a Level 3-only course. Do not compare the prices as though both include the same training.

Compare how you will learn to coach

Ask how much of the learning involves observing, planning and delivering coaching rather than only reading or watching content. Request examples of how a tutor gives feedback and how you are expected to use it before assessment.

Check the exact award, attendance, learning materials, support and complete cost. A recognised qualification title helps you identify the route; it does not tell you whether the delivery fits your work schedule or gives you the support you need.

  • Tutor-led teaching and practical observation
  • Independent study and preparation between sessions
  • Practice expectations and access to a suitable setting
  • Assessment tasks, feedback and reassessment terms
  • Current fee, compulsory extras and cancellation terms

Prepare for assessment as a process

Active IQ identifies knowledge assessment, an assignment, a case study, observation and questioning for this qualification. Ask SSTA how these are sequenced and what evidence you need to prepare.

Make a record of feedback while training. Turn broad comments into a specific practice task: explain a movement more clearly, improve the order of a session or justify a programme decision. Being able to repeat a session is different from understanding why it fits the person in front of you.

Check what your intended work requires

Speak to employers or venues you may want to work with about their current requirements. For self-employment, consider suitable insurance, first-aid arrangements, working permissions, client records, scope and business administration. Check requirements for your own circumstances rather than treating a certificate as the only condition.

Choose further study because it supports work you want to do and meets a real prerequisite or scope need. Mat Pilates, sports massage and specialist exercise coaching involve additional knowledge and training; they are not automatically included in a personal training qualification.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree to investigate becoming a personal trainer?

A degree is not the only route. The National Careers Service describes college, apprenticeship and specialist training options. Check the exact entry requirements for the route you are considering.

Can I start SSTA Level 3 without Level 2?

The Active IQ route identified by SSTA requires a suitable Level 2 Gym Instructing or Fitness Instructing qualification. Ask the academy to check your current certificate or discuss the Level 2 starting route.

How quickly can I qualify?

That depends on the actual programme, your starting point and successful completion of its requirements. Ask SSTA for the current timetable and assessment sequence rather than relying on a generic completion claim.
