Gather the information for your own class
Put the latest joining message, course reference and contact details together. Check the exact date, arrival time, location and any advance task against those documents. A general course page or qualification specification cannot tell you the room or running order for your first session.
Active IQ’s overview lists knowledge assessment, case study, and observation and questioning for its Level 3 Technical Specialist in Sports Massage Therapy (Diploma). The qualification specification also lists an assignment evaluating your own practice. These describe assessment across the qualification; your joining instructions explain what to expect on the first day.
Complete a preparation sheet
This example is for fictional learner Morgan; it reports no real SSTA arrangements. Copy the questions into a note and replace each status with your own evidence.
Scroll sideways to compare the columns. Row labels stay visible.
| Item | Morgan’s preparation note | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | I have the course page, but no joining message. | Request the exact arrival location, time and contact. |
| Materials | I own a notebook; the reading resource is unconfirmed. | Ask what to bring and whether advance reading is assigned. |
| Clothing | I have seen training photographs only. | Request the current practical clothing guidance. |
| Participation | I want to understand how practical learning is introduced. | Ask how activities are explained and how to discuss concerns. |
| Day arrangements | Breaks and storage have not been confirmed. | Ask about these practical details without assuming facilities. |
Ask about participation in plain language
A useful question is specific enough to answer: “Could you explain how learners are introduced to practical activities, what participation is expected and who I should contact before class about a concern?” If you need an access or learning arrangement, ask about the process early and share relevant details through the provider’s intended channel.
Another useful question is: “Is any preparation required before the first class, and where can I find the instructions?” Avoid setting yourself an invented task, buying equipment or arranging practice because an unrelated online account described it.
Make your final check the day before
Review the actual answers, pack confirmed items and make a note of any remaining question. Save the arrival contact somewhere you can access without relying on a complicated login. Use the supplied address to plan your journey; check current travel information separately.
Your finished sheet should distinguish three things: confirmed arrangements, actions you have completed and unanswered points. If a key arrival detail is missing, contact the provider. If only a study question remains, write it clearly so you can raise it when appropriate rather than trying to solve the whole course before it starts.
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Should I memorise all the anatomy before the first session?
Follow any assigned preparation first. If no advance task is given, prepare your materials and a short question list rather than inventing a complete syllabus to finish before class.
How do I raise a concern about practical participation?
Contact the provider before class, describe what you need to understand and ask who handles that discussion. This guide cannot promise a particular arrangement on the provider’s behalf.
