How to Become a Yoga Instructor

The National Careers Service identifies college and specialist training routes into yoga teaching. It advises that prospective teachers usually have several years of practice with a qualified teacher. That is career guidance, not a universal legal entry rule; each provider sets its own requirements.

Use your regular classes to notice how the teacher introduces a practice, offers options, handles questions and gives people space to decline an activity. Discuss your teaching interest with them. Consider which style and group you would like to teach, and whether you enjoy supporting someone whose experience differs from your own.

British Wheel of Yoga explains that its foundation courses deepen personal understanding and do not qualify participants to teach. Its teacher-training routes have separate entry expectations. For example, its Certificate and Diploma information asks for regular class experience of at least two years, with anatomy and physiology preparation also addressed.

Use that as one concrete route to investigate, not a rule for all UK providers or a description of SSTA’s future course. Request the exact award, awarding or accrediting body, prerequisites and assessment. A headline number of hours alone does not explain the qualification level, observed teaching or recognition by your intended venue and insurer.

Ask how trainees practise planning and delivering sessions, how tutors observe them and what happens when a teaching decision needs improvement. A useful practice task is to teach a short sequence, receive feedback on its clarity and pacing, then teach it again with a specific change.

Check that the programme addresses the context and philosophy of the practice as well as anatomy, physical instruction and professional responsibilities. Ask how it teaches consent, participant choice, suitable adaptations and referral. Confidence should come from supervised learning and reflection, rather than an expectation to demonstrate increasingly difficult poses.

Describe the intended class in one sentence: who it is for, the style and what participants can expect. Build a lesson plan and test the arrival, equipment, space and communication arrangements. Ask an experienced teacher or mentor to review the plan and identify decisions you have missed.

Confirm suitable insurance and the venue’s requirements before accepting bookings. Where you intend to work with children or vulnerable adults, check the safeguarding and background-check requirements for the actual role. Specialist teaching such as pregnancy yoga or yoga therapy needs its own training and scope review; a general teaching award should not be treated as automatic preparation.

Compare teaching for an established venue with organising your own classes. Ask who handles bookings, participant information, cancellations, equipment and payment. A room-hire offer and an employed teaching role create different responsibilities even if both are described as an opportunity to teach.

Include preparation, administration and travel when thinking about your weekly capacity. A class is more than its time on the timetable. You can start with a manageable schedule, review what participants need and choose further development from the experience you gain.

SSTA is considering future yoga instructor training. The qualification, awarding organisation, level, tutor, entry requirements, delivery and timetable are not yet published. Registering interest requests an information update; it does not enrol you, reserve a place or provide priority access.
