How to Become a Pilates Instructor

Notice what your instructor does while you attend a class: explain the task, watch participants, offer appropriate options and manage the session. Your own practice helps you understand movement, but teaching requires you to respond to other people.

Speak to an instructor about the preparation and administration behind a class. Consider whether you prefer group teaching, one-to-one sessions or a combination, and how these fit your available time. Avoid choosing a route only because the visible part of the job looks appealing.

SSTA’s published course is Mat Pilates instructor training. If you intend to teach on a reformer or other apparatus, ask about the specific training and competence required for that equipment. A mat course should not be assumed to cover every Pilates teaching environment.

Ask a prospective studio what it requires from instructors and compare that with the actual syllabus. This is particularly useful if you have a specific setting in mind. Course names and provider descriptions vary, so keep the certificate title and teaching scope together in your notes.

Find out how the course connects anatomy and movement principles to session planning, demonstration, cueing and observation. Ask how often you practise teaching and how a tutor gives feedback. A video library alone does not explain the quality or extent of practical learning.

Check the entry route, required personal practice, teaching practice, attendance and assessment. Ask what happens if you need more support or have to repeat an assessment. Compare the full fee alongside these commitments.

Think through a first class before committing to a venue: capacity, equipment, arrival, access, screening, suitability questions and the session plan. Work within your qualification, competence and insurance, and check when specialist needs require additional training or referral.

For self-employment, include room hire, marketing, bookings, cancellations and administration in your plan. A class timetable is not a guarantee of attendance or income. An employed or contracted role also needs clear terms about responsibilities and the teaching expected.
