Before you compare
- Match training to your intended teaching environment.
- Check equipment-specific content and supervised teaching practice.
- Compare complete costs, including access needed for practice.
- SSTA publishes a Mat Pilates route; reformer training is not implied.
Start with the teaching setting
Picture where you want to teach and what participants will use. A mat class and a reformer studio create different preparation questions. Neither should be chosen only because it appears more popular on social media.
Scroll sideways to compare the columns. Row labels stay visible.
| Decision | Mat training | Reformer training |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | A mat-based teaching environment, with any additional props specified | Apparatus-specific teaching and appropriate equipment access |
| Practice | Check personal practice and opportunities to lead mat sessions | Check access to the apparatus for personal and teaching practice |
| Venue | Check space, flooring, capacity, access and equipment storage | Check the studio, equipment use, maintenance and class capacity |
| Qualification | Verify the precise mat teaching award and scope | Verify apparatus scope, prerequisites and assessment |
Check prerequisites rather than assuming an order
Providers structure their programmes differently. Some routes expect an existing foundation; others package several stages together. Ask exactly what prior training is accepted and what each stage enables you to teach.
If you already hold a certificate, send the full title to the provider. If you are starting from scratch, ask whether a quoted programme includes the foundations or expects you to complete them elsewhere. Similar-looking prices can hide different entry routes.
Compare teaching practice and feedback
Ask how the course develops observation, clear instructions, session planning and appropriate adaptations. For apparatus training, ask specifically how equipment use is taught and assessed. Record the time you must attend and the work expected between sessions.
Try to understand how you will receive individual feedback, who gives it and how assessment works. The number of videos, manuals or certificates is not a complete description of a teaching experience.
- What will I practise teaching?
- Who observes me and how do I receive feedback?
- What setting or equipment do I need outside taught sessions?
- What must I demonstrate to pass?
- What happens if I need more preparation?
Compare cost against your actual plan
Include tuition, assessment, travel and any required access to a studio or equipment. If you plan to operate your own classes, explore venue and equipment commitments separately from the training fee. Do not assume a qualification package includes the cost of starting a studio.
SSTA’s published offer is Mat Pilates instructor training. Ask the academy for the current course details and explain your intended teaching setting. If your aim requires another specialism, identify that before committing.
