Before you compare
- The qualification is defined by its title and awarding organisation, not by where you study the theory.
- Practical coaching skills are still assessed in person.
- Online study suits people who can plan their own time and practise with real people between modules.
- SSTA’s Level 3 course is studied online for £999, with in-person attendance only for assessment.
What “online” covers, and what it does not
On an online course the knowledge content is studied remotely: anatomy and physiology, programme design principles, nutrition within scope and professional practice. Active IQ’s Level 3 diploma also uses practical observation and questioning, so you still demonstrate coaching in person.
At SSTA you study online and attend in person only for assessment. Ask the team to confirm the assessment date and venue before you enrol.
Your starting qualification still matters. Beginners should review Level 2 first; holders of a suitable Level 2 can ask about Level 3 entry. Online describes the study format, not a way to skip the prerequisite.
Compare the two formats
Neither format is better in general. The right one depends on your time, your learning style and your access to somewhere to practise.

| Online study | Face-to-face classes | |
|---|---|---|
| Timetable | Study around work and family | Fixed class days and times |
| Practical practice | You arrange practice with friends, family or gym users | Practice built into class time with tutors and peers |
| Tutor contact | Remote support; check how and how quickly tutors reply | Direct feedback during sessions |
| Travel | Only for assessment | Every class day |
| Cost | Often fewer venue costs; compare the complete amount payable | May include more taught practical time |
Who online study suits
Online study works best if you can set aside regular study time, are comfortable learning from written and recorded material, and can practise coaching real people between modules, for example at the gym where you already train or work.
If you learn best by watching and copying in a room, or you have no one to practise with, a course with more taught practical time may suit you better.
Questions to ask any online provider
Ask these before you pay, and get the answers in writing.
- What is the exact qualification title and awarding organisation?
- How does tutor support work, and how quickly do tutors reply?
- How are practical coaching skills taught before assessment?
- Where and when does practical assessment take place?
- What does the fee include, and what does reassessment cost?
- What practice must I arrange, who can observe it, and do I need permission to use a gym or bring a participant?
- How many in-person assessment visits are required, and what happens if I cannot attend?
Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is an online personal trainer qualification recognised?
Recognition comes from the qualification itself: its title, level and awarding organisation. Check those. SSTA’s course leads to the Active IQ Level 3 Technical Occupational Entry in Personal Training (Diploma).
Do I need to attend anything in person?
Yes, for assessment. At SSTA you study online and attend in person only for assessment.
Is an online personal trainer course cheaper?
It can be, because there are fewer venue costs, but compare the complete amount payable. SSTA’s Level 3 course is £999, course only.
