Decide whether you want to teach matwork or reformer
A matwork teaching course and a reformer teaching course are not interchangeable descriptions. Compare the activity and equipment covered, the starting requirements and what the final qualification prepares you to teach.
SSTA’s Pilates route discussed here is matwork. Do not assume reformer or specialist population training is included. If your goal is a particular studio role, ask that studio which qualifications and experience it expects before choosing a route.
Get the exact award and current version
A familiar course label does not identify an award completely. Record the full title, awarding organisation, qualification number and current specification. Confirm which version the provider will register you for and which assessments apply.
Active IQ publishes more than one Pilates matwork diploma page, and its legacy page carries a withdrawal notice for new registrations from 31 December 2026. That notice does not establish which version SSTA delivers or that SSTA’s intended route is closing. Ask admissions to confirm the exact approved award and registration arrangements before relying on a unit count or assessment list.
Use local provider information as evidence, not a league table

Compare preparation for teaching other people
Enjoying your own practice and learning to teach others involve different decisions. Ask how a course develops observation, cueing, planning and feedback, and how you will practise those skills before assessment.
Provider practice expectations may go beyond an awarding body’s minimum entry rules. Describe your background honestly and ask whether the course is suitable now or whether more practice would help you prepare. Do not assume a recommended number of months at one provider is SSTA’s entry policy.
Put attendance, fees and graduate support side by side
Ask for compulsory teaching and assessment attendance, expected independent practice, current fee and inclusions. SSTA dates and the timetable are confirmed once the course fills. Explain your availability and wait for confirmation before making non-refundable travel plans.
If you intend to teach classes after qualifying, compare what help exists with the practical business decisions: a venue, clear service information and a dependable enquiry or booking process. Check the terms for SSTA’s Hub or workshop separately. Planned platform features, class demand and income should not be treated as guaranteed parts of a training outcome.
