Pilates teaching earnings guide

Pilates Instructor Salary and Class Income

The National Careers Service lists Pilates teacher salary as variable. For mat teaching, distinguish a studio’s payment to you from the total paid by class attendees, then budget for preparation, venue costs and classes that do not fill.

Earnings at a glance

  • NCS publishes no fixed annual salary range for Pilates teachers.
  • A studio teaching fee and independent class turnover are different measures.
  • Attendance has a direct effect on independent class income.
  • Mat Pilates training should not be treated as reformer or specialist training.

What the national profile tells you

The National Careers Service Pilates teacher profile was checked on 8 September 2026 and lists salary as variable. It describes both group and individual teaching. That wider career profile is useful background, but it does not give an earnings figure specific to newly qualified mat teachers.

Keep specialist equipment roles separate when researching vacancies. A reformer studio may require further training and different experience from a mat teaching role. SSTA’s exact Mat Pilates award and current requirements should be confirmed before relying on the course for a particular vacancy.

Who receives the class income?

If a venue pays you an agreed teaching fee, ask whether it stays the same at low attendance, includes preparation or depends on a minimum number of bookings. The sum paid by the participants is not necessarily your income: the venue may collect it and pay you separately.

For your own class, you collect the revenue and carry the room booking and attendance risk. Consider how block bookings, refunds, cover teachers and seasonal breaks would work. Set a class size appropriate to your training, venue and ability to observe participants, rather than choosing capacity only to maximise a spreadsheet.

Keep salary, turnover and take-home separate

Compare money over the same period and for the same amount of work. An employed gross annual salary is pay before deductions. A session fee is a sale to a client; add completed, paid bookings to find business turnover. Profit is what remains after business costs. Personal take-home also depends on tax, pension provision and other commitments.

The examples below are simplified planning exercises. All prices, bookings and costs are invented inputs, not SSTA prices, market averages or predictions. They do not calculate taxable profit or personal take-home. Check which expenses are allowable under the rules for your circumstances.

An illustrative mat class budget

Imagine eight paid places at an invented £10 per class: £80 turnover. Deduct an assumed £25 room hire and £10 towards other running costs to leave £45 before tax and personal provisions. These are invented inputs, not a local price survey or SSTA charges.

With one hour teaching and another hour for planning, setup, records and booking administration, that remainder is £22.50 per working hour. At four paid places, the same assumed £35 costs leave only £5. The arithmetic shows why a class that looks attractive when full needs a realistic attendance plan. Equipment, initial training and weeks without classes need their own allowance.

Build a plan for Chichester and Sussex

For mat Pilates teaching work around Chichester, collect current vacancies and actual quotes within a journey you can sustain. Record contracted hours, duties and guaranteed pay separately from commission or possible client income. National career guidance does not establish a Sussex salary or the number of clients available locally.

For independent work, investigate room capacity, venue hire, equipment storage, cover arrangements and travel between classes. Compare a quiet period with a sustainable regular week, and allow for holidays, illness and cancellations. A full diary assumption can hide the amount of work needed before the first booking and between sessions.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much do Pilates teachers earn per year?

NCS lists annual salary as variable. A useful personal estimate requires the actual studio contract or a plan for paid classes, attendance, costs and teaching weeks.

Can a mat teacher use reformer instructor salaries as a benchmark?

Only if the role’s qualification, equipment training and duties match. A mat teaching course should not be assumed to prepare you for a reformer or specialist vacancy.

Is a full class all profit?

No. Independent class receipts are turnover. Subtract venue and other costs, count unpaid preparation and administration, and allow for cancellations and time off.
